rhuk's Classic Solarflare III – It has a "Retro Look" but under the covers It's full of HTML5 and CSS3 goodness. It's a great template to use as a learning experience for designing templates for Joomla! 3.0.x. The template features a gray/red/white color scheme optimized for screen widths of 1024px or greater.

Compatible with Joomla! 3.0.x. It will not work on previous versions of the Joomla! CMS.
Tested with IE9, Firefox, and Chrome on Windows 7; Firefox and Chrome on Ubuntu Linux.
Not compatible with IE8 and below.

rhuk Solarflare II – A template with a gray/red theme that is optimized for screen widths of 1024px or greater. This template is for use with Joomla! 1.6.x. It will not work on Joomla! 1.5.x sites.

What is This?

Caveat emptor: This information has not been updated since the Joomla! 1.5.3 release in April 2008.

This is some stuff I learned while attempting to upgrade my existing Joomla! 1.0.x templates to work with Joomla! CMS 1.5. There's nothing much original here. The information in the underlying pages was gathered from Developer Blogs, Documentation and various Forum Posts at the official Joomla! Project web site.

Very Brief Overview

Joomla! is an Open Source (GPLv2) CMS that uses modules, components, and plugins to organize, manipulate and present content. A complete discussion of these constructs is beyond the scope of this discussion. If you are new to all this, you can find more information about this stuff at Joomla.org:

If you are still interested in this stuff after reading the above, read the underlying pages and learn arcane techno-factoids about stuff like templateDetails.xml, index.php, template_css.css.and last, but certainly not least, the core css classes.

Joomla! 1.5 Templates

These templates are versions of the popular rhuk Solarflare II template that was initially developed for the Mambo CMS and subsequently modified for use with the Joomla! CMS 1.0.x releases. A number of the Mambo and Joomla! based sites out there today still use this template or a variation thereof.

The templates have been tested in the following environments:

IE7, IE8 and Firefox 2.x.x, 3.x.x on Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista Ultimate-64, and Windows 7 Ultimate-64
Firefox 2.x.x, 3.x.x and Chrome 6.0.427.0 dev on Ubuntu Linux 9.10.

A demo of the templates is available here.

The following templates are for use with Joomla! 1.5.x running in native mode. They will not work on Joomla! 1.0.x or Mambo sites.
